Death Valley Hosts Night Sky Program January 27 – 28º

 

DEATH VALLEY, CA – On Friday, Janeiro 27 e sábado, Janeiro 28, Las Vegas Astronomical Society (SAVA) and Death Valley National Park will host a night sky program.

 

LVAS members, park rangers and guest astronomers will bring telescopes for the public to view night sky features such as Venus, constellations in the Winter Circle, the Orion Nebula, and other star clusters, galaxies, and nebulae.

 

Parking is available in the golf course parking area at the Furnace Creek Resort in Death Valley National Park. Signs and red path lights will guide pedestrians to the observing area. Visitors are asked to minimize the use of white flashlights; red cellophane will be provided to cover white lights in order to protect observers’ night vision. Visitors should dress appropriately for the weather.

 

There will be an opportunity to view features of the sun through a solar scope in front of the General Store at Furnace Creek Resort from 10 sou a 2 pm on Saturday.

 

Death Valley National Park is the largest International Dark Sky Park in the world, designated by the International Dark Sky Association.

Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep Field Trips: Janeiro. 27, Feb. 24 and Apr. 22, 2017

 

Winter and early spring is the time of year when the endangered Sierra bighorn are most easily found and viewed before they retreat to higher elevations. These animals are difficult to see and there are just over 600 in the world all in the Sierra Nevada

 

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Sierra Nevada Bighorn Sheep Foundation provide free public field trips to view Sierra bighorn. Tentative dates for 2017 are January 27, Fevereiro 24 and April 22. Typically very little walking is required.

 

Pre-registration asksnbs@wildlife.ca.gov is required as space is limited and field trips are weather and road condition dependent.

Meet at 9:00 AM at the CDFW Bishop parking lot 787 N. Main at the corner of Main and Yaney (Cottonwood Grove Shopping Center). Be dressed for the weather and in sturdy footwear. Sun protection is highly recommended. Bring your binoculars or scopes if you have them. Field trips are typically concluded by noon.
